Boylagari

March 26, 2024

Poush and Magh month of Bengal year are winter season. In winter, fairs are held in different parts of the country. Some fairs last for 02 days and some fairs last up to 30 days. Today I will talk about one such fair which is exceptional compared to other fairs. Its name is 'Boylagari'. The fair was held in Bargacha village of Raninagar upazila of Naogaon district.

Every year in the middle to the end of Poush month, this fair is held under the leadership of locals.  Different information is available on different web-sites about the duration of the fair, but actually the duration of this fair is 7 days. However, the duration of this fair on different pages is 2 days.  It is a completely rural fair. Hundred years ago, this fair was started by the initiative of the locals. The main attraction of this fair is fish.  Although it sounds surprising, it is true. Fish weighing around 5 kg to 20 kg each are available at the fair.  Besides, various other things are available in this fair such as-Furniture, plants, various sweets, and other essentials.

However, there are various unwritten rules and etiquettes in this fair. For example- On the first day of the fair, the in-laws of the house bought fish and sweets. The next day, the wife of the house gets all kinds of cosmetics and goes to fairs. Next day there is football game which is led by the locals and various prizes are given to the winners. However, this hundred-year-old fair seems to be losing its popularity day by day. The place where this fair is located has now been built by a homestead. As a result, the size, scope and duration of fairs are decreasing compared to earlier.
